Mom Of Murder Victim Still Waiting 18 Years Later
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
August 1st will always be a day that stays in the mind of Ms. Wanda Conaway. It’s not a day that she celebrates, but a day that would not have affected her life as it did. This year marks the 18th an- niversary of the death of her son, Warren Donnell Mitchell, Sr.
For the past 18 years, she has waited for answers. She wants to know who killed her son. As it stands, she doesn’t know if the killer is dead or alive, or if he is still in Tampa, or if he has left town.
For the past 18 years, the com- munity has remained silent about the death of Warren Donnell Mitchell, Sr. Had Mitchell lived, he would have celebrated his 43rd birthday on January 9. His family, led by his mother, Ms. Wanda Conaway, keeps his memory alive
and celebrates his birth.
Mitchell was fatally injured by
gunfire around 9 p. m., on August 1, 2004. He was in the area of Colum- bus Drive and MacDill Street when an unknown assailant shot him as he sat in his car. Mitchell drove a short distance and contacted a Tampa Police officer, who contact emergency services. Mitchell was transported to Tampa General Hos- pital, where he died as a result of his injuries.
Ms. Conaway said, “The whole family is praying that someone will come forward with information. It has been 18 years, I need to know something.”
She stays in contact with the de- tective assigned to the case at the Tampa Police Department. But, like so many other murders of young Black men, the case has grown cold because of a lack of information.
She continues to wait for the
telephone to ring and the detective tells her that he has news of her son’s murder. Ms. Conaway re- fuses to give up and stands fast on the fact that she will learn about her son’s murder.
Anyone with information about the murder can remain anonymous by contacting Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay at 1-800-873-TIPS; or online at www.crimestoppers.com.
Anyone with information about the murder may be eligible for a re- ward of up to $5,000.
