Mentoring Program Wants To Give Young Men Positive Goals
BY LEON B. CREWS Sentinel Staff Writer
Many African American males between the ages of 12 and 19 are doing great things. Some are just beginning to re- alize their potential and oth- ers are taking advantage of opportunities made for them.
Darrell Starling and a group of other men want to address the others who have turned a different corner in their lives, and have opted to live a life of lawlessness and have set no goals in their lives.
“Every Monday from 6 p. m.to7:30p.m.,wetrytopro- vide a positive environment for these young males by giv- ing them a chance to grow and set goals in their lives,” said Starling.
“We’re not in a position to give up on any of them, be- cause we think what we’re try- ing to do for them is worth any sacrifice.”
Starling said he’d not only like to see the young men attend the program, but their families as well.
“We’ve set up a 12-week mentoring program and it is open to all.
“All we’re trying to do is make a difference. With all the violence going on today, we hope we can be instrumen- tal in turning things around for these young men and giv- ing them a positive direction to follow.”
The sessions will be held at Shear Excellence Barber- shop, 4707 East Busch Boule- vard.

Miss Black Florida Pageant Gives Aspiring Women Opportunity To Grow
BY LEON B. CREWS Sentinel Staff Writer
With all of the beauty pageants going on in this country, in 1986 Karen Arrington came up with the idea of a Miss Black USA Pageant.
Since that time, women between the ages of 18 and 27 have been given the opportunity to de- velop a platform to be heard, and extend their ed- ucational futures.
Thanks to Kaye F. Barnes, Executive State Director for the pageant, Florida will host this year’s pageant.
The Lagniappe Legacy Foundation and Pag- eant Chic Incorporated want to invite area Black women to become a part of this revolution.
The winner of the Miss Black Florida Pageant will represent the state in the Miss Black USA Scholarship Pageant in 2016.
On Saturday, March 28th from 12 p. m. until 4 p. m., a contestant open call will be held at Em- bassy Suites USF, 3705 Spectrum Boulevard.
For the open call, the ladies are asked to bring a headshot, and platform titles will be awarded to those who want to participate.
The mission of the Miss Black USA Pageant is to provide educational opportunities to out- standing young women of color and to develop the “whole woman mind, body and spirit” that will encourage them to embrace and showcase the Black community’s cultural diversity and to assist them in inspiring the world through their social and humanitarian efforts.
It is also the mission of the Pageant to provide

young women of color with personal, profes- sional, academic, and scholarship opportunities. The organizers said for the first time in his- tory, they’ve got sisters in positions of prestige and power at powerhouse corporations and or- ganizations. They feel it’s time to redefine what it means to be courageous, compassionate, and confident Black women today. Black women today have obstacles to overcome and stereo-
types to smash.
