Welcome to March 2015! Wow! It’s almost over! The birth flower of March is the Daffodil. The birthstone for the month of March is the Aquamarine and Bloodstone. These stones symbolize courage.
Some of the special ob- servances during the month of March are: American Red Cross Month, Employee Spirit Month, National Nu- trition Month, National So- cial Work Month, National Multiple Sclerosis Education & Awareness Month, Child Life Month, Spiritual Well- ness Month, and Youth Art Month. Here’s hoping you have had a ‘Marvelous March!’
FAMU President Visits Lakeland
Recently, Dr. Elmira Mangum, President of Florida Agricultural and Me- chanical University (FAMU) served as the keynote speaker at FAMU Polk
County Alumni Chapter’s an- nual scholarship gala. The gala, which was coordinated by Doris Hicks, President of the Polk County Alumni Chapter, was held at The Lakeland Center. Mangum is the first female to serve as President of FAMU.
Local NAACP Sponsors Session for Felons
On Saturday, March 7th, the Lakeland Branch NAACP sponsored an informational session to provide informa- tion to persons who: (1) have been convicted of a felony; (2) are interested in having their civil rights restored; and (3) wanted to register to vote. The host-site of the session was the Dream Cen- ter of Lakeland. Organiza- tions who partnered with the Lakeland Branch NAACP were: Virgil Hawkins Bar Association of Polk County, Dream Center of Lakeland, and Florida Rights Restora- tion Coalition.

500 Women In Red Service Held
On Sunday afternoon, March 8th, women (and men) came from near and far to experience the 8th Annual 500 Women in Red Event ‘Don’t Allow Your Disap- pointment to Paralyze Your Future’ at RHEMA Word of Faith International, H. B. Holmes, Jr., Senior Pastor. Minister Nedra Butler served as the Mistress of Cer- emony.
The experience began with Prayer rendered by Evangelist Faye Reed. The RHEMA family and their guests received a warm Welcome by Sister Sab- rina Haynes, followed with Poetry shared by Sis. Jacqueline Zinnerman.
The sweet aura of the sanctuary was nurtured as praise and worship was ren- dered by: The Shalom Singers, RHEMA Angels Praise Dancers, The Burgess Family, and God’s Anointed Praise.
Minister Butler gave a
beautiful introduction of Dr. B. J. Relefourd, who served as The Messenger during this awesome experi- ence. Dr. Relefourd en- couraged and inspired the audience with a message en- titled ‘The Pressure of Paral- ysis’. The supporting scripture passage was John 10:10-11. Dr. Relefourd and Minister Butler ren- dered an Altar Call. Closing Remarks and Benediction were given by Pastor H. B. Holmes, Jr.

DATE (Dare, Alcohol, Traffic, Education) offers a driver’s course for first-time drivers, ages 14- 1/2 and older. After success- ful completion of this four-hour course, the stu- dent can receive his/her Learner’s Permit.

Museum Celebrates ‘African American Art Since 1950’ With New Exhibition

The exhibition, which fea- tures 62 works of art by 55 artists, comprises mostly works from the Driskell Cen- ter’s Permanent Art Collec- tion. The show couples works by renowned artists such as Romare Bearden, Eliza- beth Catlett and Sam Gilliam with exciting new vi-
sionaries like Chakaia Booker, Lorna Simpson and Kara Walker.
The exhibition was cu- rated by Dr. Robert E. Steele and Dorit Yaron, the David C. Driskell Center’s former executive director and acting director, respectively, and independent scholar Dr. Adrienne L. Childs, and brings to the nation the next
pivotal chapter of African American art.
This exhibition is sup- ported, in part, by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council.
The exhibition will be cel- ebrated at a reception begin- ning at 6 p.m. Friday, March 20, at the Museum. Members will be admitted for free; guests are $10.

LAKELAND — Polk Mu- seum of Art is proud to wel- come a remarkable exhibition that celebrates the growing prominence and complexity of the field of African Ameri- can art over the last six decades. “African American Art Since 1950: Perspectives from the David C. Driskell Center” opens March 21 and will be on view through June
27.
The exhibition was organ-
ized by the David C. Driskell Center for the Study of the Vi- sual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora at the Uni- versity of Maryland. It honors the legacy of the 1976 exhibi- tion “Two Centuries of Black American Art: 1750-1950,” curated by Professor David
