Sulphur Springs Remains ‘A Work In Progress’
At 10:16 p. m. last Monday night, 23-year-old King Solomon House, III was riding his bicycle in the 1700 block of East Idell Street in Sulphur Springs.
Tampa Police said as House was riding, a small 4- door black vehicle approached, and several shots were fired at House, striking him at least once in the upper body. He was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening in- juries, and police interviewed possible witnesses at the scene.
This incident was after a successful rally held in Sulphur Springs that brought law en- forcement and the community together.
“We never expected the rally to address all the issues at one time, but it was a step in the right direction,” said spokesperson Janelle Mc- Gregor.
“Bringing the residents and police together proved benefi- cial as more than 300 residents came out to show their support in helping keep Sulphur Springs safe.”
McGregor said everyone needs to continue the relation- ship of working together to solve crimes and prevent fu- ture ones from taking place.
“Since the Rally, we have received more cooperation from residents and witnesses than in the past. With Memo- rial Day, we encouraged par- ents to be more alert about what they’re children are

doing. Taking steps to look into their rooms, look at their associates, and other measures that can keep their kids out of harm’s way.
“Support from parents would help us prevent future crimes and keep the commu- nity safe.
Joseph Robinson, who along with his wife, Norma have been involved in restoring Sulphur Springs to the family community it once was, said it’s hard to say just how much progress has been made in Sul- phur Springs.
“I don’t know what’s going on with the bicycle citations, and it’s going to take a lot to address the needs of this com- munity and it’s going to take a lot of money.
“I feel a lot of people have done a lot of posturing about what’s going on in Sulphur Springs. You can’t walk or march your way out of the problems in this community.”
Mr. Robinson said he
thinks there is a lack of every- thing in Sulphur Springs.
“The people with nothing, are preying on the people who are doing well. That’s where the effort needs to go. Some- one has got to make them do something. As a matter of sur- vival, some people will do whatever it takes.
“I presented a program to the City that would help gener- ate jobs, especially teaching the young people vocational trades right here in the community.”
Mr. Robinson said he has to be careful, because he and his wife still have to live in Sul- phur Springs, but there is just a huge atmosphere of hope- lessness, and we’ve got to offer them something.
“It may take 5 or 6 years, but by then the teenagers will be productive citizens.
“These young people live with their parents or girl- friends/boyfriends, and appear to not be interested in anything because no one has offered them a way out.”
Mr. Robinson said the young people can work and it’s up to them to train them and put them to work.
“That’s how it starts. If we don’t iron this out, it’s going to get a lot worse.
“It’s naïve to think that a rally or march will make things change overnight. It’s going to take a lot more than that, and we have to be consistent and persistent.”
