Last week, in one of his first official acts as Interim Chief, Assistant Chief Eric Ward presented several awards. The award were given to several members of the community and within the de- partment who helped make the “Peace in the Springs” Community Rally successful.
The anti-violence rally drew more than 300 partici- pants and residents of the Sul- phur Springs neighborhoods to rally against violent crime in the neighborhood. The rally took place on Saturday, April
18th.
The call for a rally against
violence came about after two teenagers died within five days of each as a result of guns.
Ikeim Boswell, 16, was accidentally shot and died on March 16th and 14-year-old Richard Newton, who died on March 21st, was attending a birthday party when he was struck by gunfire.
Ms. Vivian Heyward is one of the recipients of the Cit- izens Appreciation Award. For several years, Ms. Heyward has held an annual candlelight vigil to remember those who died of violence.
She said, “Death is never a
welcomed visitor, even when we know it’s going to happen. But, we are losing our youth far too early to gun-related vi- olence. As a community, we must come together to rid our
communities of this violence that often ends with the sense- less loss of life. Our children are dying before they have even had a chance to live.”
Other award recipients
were: Reverend Ray Sanabria, Ray Acosta, Neighborhood Affairs Liaison Lisa Timmer, April Goode, and Weed and Seed Coordinator Earl Silas.
Police Forced To Fatally Shoot Teenager
Who Fired At Officers
On Sunday night, St. Pe- tersburg Police officers fatally shot an 18-year-old at his home after he allegedly shot an officer in the leg.
Police said Austin Goodner was wanted in an- other shooting when he was killed Sunday night. Earlier that day, a victim told police Goodner had pulled a gun, shot him in the hand, and fled on his bicycle.
Officers went to Good- ner’s house and were told by his parents their son wasn’t there. But Goodner sud- denly appeared in the yard and shot an officer in the leg. That’s when other officers confronted Goodner, he re- portedly fired again, and they returned fire, hitting him in the upper body.
The officer, whose name was not released, is recover- ing, and the State Attorney’s Office is investigating the in- cident.
