Teenager Wounded In Drive-By Shooting
Judge Rules There’s Enough Evidence To Charge Officers In 12-Year-Old’s Death
TAMIR RICE
Last Thursday a judge said that enough evidence exists to charge two white police officers in the fatal shooting of a 12- year-old African American boy who was holding a pellet gun. The ruling is considered sym- bolic because the judge can’t compel prosecutors to charge them.
Judge Ronald Adrine
ruled there’s probable cause to charge rookie officer Timothy Loehmann with murder, in- voluntary manslaughter, reck- less homicide or dereliction of duty in the November shooting death of Tamir Rice. He also ruled there’s evidence to charge Loehmann’s partner, Frank Garmback, with reckless homicide or dereliction of duty.
The ruling was made after ac- tivists submitted affidavits ask- ing the court to rule there’s enough evidence to charge the officers in Tamir’s death, a move that spurred protests and complaints about the treatment of Blacks by police.
The Cuyahoga County Sher- iff’s Department in Cleveland, Ohio recently completed its in- vestigation and gave its file to the county prosecutors whose staff is reviewing the case while preparing to take it to a grand jury to determine if criminal charges should be filed.
Police officials said Loeh- mann ordered Rice three times to put up his hands before he shot the boy. A former police union official said officers had no way of knowing Rice was carrying a pellet gun that looked like a real firearm.
The officers had responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting that a man was pointing and waving a gun at a playground outside a recre- ation center. The caller said the gun might not be real, but that information wasn’t relayed to the officers.
Woman Charged With Child Abuse
Tampa Police said a drive-by shooting incident left a 16- year-old girl wounded. At 10:45 p. m. Saturday, a dark colored vehicle with tinted windows pulled up to a group of youth standing on the cor- ner of 14th Street and Humphrey in Sulphur Springs.
Police said three shots were
fired into the group, wounding Jackie Parker in her lower body. Her injuries are reported to be non-life threatening, po- lice said.
Officers on patrol in the area heard the shots and arrived on the scene in minutes.
Witnesses were interviewed at the scene.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reports that on June 10th a 10-year-old boy was attending a Cypress Creek Elementary School summer program when Erica Berrios intentionally chased after him and put a plastic grocery bag over his head causing him to have trouble breathing for 30 seconds.
The child had to rip a hole in the bag to breathe. He fell to the ground while Berrios was still holding the bag around his neck, deputies said.
The child identified Ber- rios, his H.O.S.T. teacher, as the person who committed the offense. She apologized and said they were playing around.
