HABSE Hosts 23rd Annual African American Achiever Awards Ceremony

Last month, members of the Hillsborough Alliance of Black School Educators (HABSE) held their 23rd An- nual African American Achievers Awards Ceremony. The event took place at the Entertainment Hall at the Florida State Fairgrounds.
More than 1,200 graduat- ing high school seniors were invited to participate in the event. Each year, student with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher are invited to celebrate their achievements.
The officers of HABSE are: Ms. Mary Dance, Presi- dent, Ms. India White, 1st Vice President, Ms. Tessa Jones, 2nd Vice President, Ms. Karen Fletcher, 3rd Vice President, and Emanuel Burch, Financial Secretary.
Some of the special guests who attended the event in- cluded Mrs. Doretha Edge- comb, Hillsborough County School Board Vice Chairper- son, Mrs. Carol Kurdell, School Board member; Mayor Bob Buckhorn, and Major Willie Parker, Jr., Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, were among the school

Robinson, Aaliyah Sim- mons, Darius Autry, Ine- cia Gaston, Kearhra Hollins, Jessica Jean, Za- kiya Johnson, Juwan Liv- ingston, Wilanda Peck, Ciara Peebles, Imani Cooper, Bernard De- vantrez, Sarah Taylor, Jaime Dawson, and Charne Smith.
Additionally, more than
400 students received medal- lions in recognition of their achievements.
Ms. Rewa Chisholm, a teacher at Philip Shore Ele- mentary School, was the re- cipient of the first Annual HABSE Excellence in Educa- tion Award.
In addition to the awards ceremony, the organization has held educational work-
shops for teachers, students, town hall meetings, book studies and student mentor- ing throughout the year.
