Kenneth Morris was playing piano with his profes- sional jazz band in Chicago in the early 30’s when he be- came ill. While on the mend there, he met Sallie Martin at the historic First Church of Deliverance, where she di- rected the choir. Who knew that this introduction would lead to the founding of the highly successful Black music publishing company known as Martin & Morris.
It was through this com- pany he would compose and publish the ground breaking gospel hymn, Yes, God Is Real in 1944:
There are some things I may not know
There are some places I can't go
But I'm sure
Of this one thing
That God is real For I can feel Him deep within
Though written over sev- enty years ago, the lyrics re- main relevant and can be heard in churches around the world. It has been recorded by many iconic singers like Mahalia Jackson, Sandi Patti, and Al Green.
Martin and Morris soon became the leading gospel music publishing company in history and operated from the 1940’s through the 1990’s.
