A ribbon cutting cere- mony at the Hunter’s Green Elementary School Commu- nity-Based Health Center was held on Friday morning, August 19, 2016.
Dr. Maria Russ, Super- visor of School Health Serv- ices for Hillsborough District Schools, said funds appro- priated by Congress- woman Kathy Castor and Senator Bill Nelson, made it possible for she and a team of School District em- ployees to write the grant for the health clinic at Hunter’s
Green.
In addition to Dr. Russ,
the team consisted of Lisa Placko, Jill Edwards and Janet Burt, and Rory Saliembene, wrote the $500,000 grant to support the Superintendent’s and School Board members’ ini- tiative, “Preparing Students for Life.”
Supt. Jeff Eakins, Wynne Tye, Asst. Supt. of Student Services and School Board members, Chair April Griffin, Co-Chair Cindy Stuart, and Susan Valdes were among the supporters of the project, which began last school term.
“Many of our kids are bused in from other areas, and our Superintendent wants to insure that the whole child is taken care of,” she said. “He wants to break down the barriers between health and educational out- comes,” she continued. “If that means taking care of their health needs, we’re here to do that. The health services provided are de- signed to reduce health bar- riers to learning, while finding permanent medical hoes for students.”
The clinic will offer free school entry and free sports examinations.
New Crime Watch Group Comes To East Tampa
BY LEON B. CREWS Sentinel Staff Writer
Because of its density, East Tampa has more neighborhood associations and watch groups than any area in Hillsborough County.
Although there are a lot of or- ganizations, there are still areas that fall between the gaps. A new East Tampa group is seek- ing to close one of those gaps.
The East Hillsboro Heights Crime Watch Group covers the area between Hillsborough Av- enue and Osborne, and 30th and 40th Streets.
The group recently held their first meeting at the Fair Oaks Community Center, and 17 resi- dents attended.
Regina Virgil, a coordinator for the group, said they’re dor- mant now, and trying to get back underway.
“We were deactivated because of a lack of participation from citizens in the area. That was years ago, although the signs are still up in the area like the group is still active. The closest group to us is Rainbow Heights, but they don’t cover our area.
“I’ve spoken with Evange- line Best, (Chair Of The East
Tampa Community Revitaliza- tion Partnership) and they are just checking us out. Right now, we’re just trying to get the word out that we’re back up and run- ning.”
Ms. Virgil said there’s a big apathy problem in their area, and Tampa Police Department spokesperson, Janelle McGre- gor, is helping them get organ- ized.
“Our primary concerns are noise, overgrowth, dilapidated properties/abandoned homes, illegal dumping, drugs and other illegal activities, and drug traf- fic.
“There are a lot of retirees in this area, and they deserve to be at peace. There are also a lot of investment properties that aren’t being represented by the people who own them, or they are renting.”
The East Hillsboro Heights Crime Watch Group meets the second Monday of each month, with their next meeting sched- uled for September 12th at Fair Oaks.
The meetings are held from 6:30 p. m. to 7:30 p. m., and all residents and business owners in the target area are asked to at- tend.
