Happy Mother’s Day, Mom. From Sharlene, Jeff, Sr., and Sabrina. You’re the Greatest Love of all, you’re our First Lady. Most of all our Queen. We love you and appreciate you for always being there for us; following your mom’s footsteps by teaching us about the Bible. We all just wanted to say, ‘Thank You Jesus We’re Blessed.’
Making History, First Black Female To Receive Her Ph.D. In Biochemistry At FIU
Dr. Chantrell Frazier, one of FIU’s Spring 2022 Real Triumphs Graduate, received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry to become the first Black female to receive her Ph.D. in Bio- chemistry from Florida Inter- national University on April 30th, 2022.
Chantrell is born and raised from Tampa, FL. Dur- ing her tenure at Jefferson High School (JHS) she aided the women’s basketball team in obtaining four consecutive district championships and a final- four appearance.
Following her high school graduation, she chose to at- tend a Georgia HBCU, Savan- nah State University (SSU), as a Forensic Science major with a concentration in Chemistry. Chantrell's hard work and determination gained her a spot on the team as a walk-on for the Lady Tigers as a Division-1, stu- dent-athlete for two years.
Chantrell's goals for her education have always been a priority. As she maintained a 3.5 throughout her time at SSU. Her last two years at SSU she started conducting undergraduate research through programs such as NIH-RISE and the University of Miami’s SURF program.
In conclusion of her par- ticipation in multiple re- search internships, she traveled to Atlanta, GA and Seattle, Washington to pres- ent her research in the fields of Organic and Biochemistry.
In 2016, she earned de-

partmental recognition being awarded the Dr. Menon De- partment Head and Professor of Chemistry Outstanding Student Award. As well as re- ceived Bachelor of Forensic Science with Magna Cum Laude honors.
Chantrell was accepted into two Ph.D. graduate pro- grams for Organic and Bio- chemistry. With great mentorship and support, she was encouraged to join Florida International Univer- sity in Fall 2016.
In 2019, Chantrell was awarded the FEF McKnight Fellowship Russell V. Ewald award for recognition of her academic excellence and high involvement in surrounding FIU communities.
As a 2-year summer intern with City of Miami Gardens running a summer STEM camp for students aged 5-12, she continued support of those students as a science and engineer fair judge. Chantrell has volunteered for multiple events through the FIU Student Access and Success Center and has pro- vided mentorship of students on the secondary and tertiary level to conduct research at FIU.
Dr. Frazier has con- ducted enlightening and in- ventive research during her 6-year graduate study. Aca- demically, she has received
multiple awards for oral and poster presentations on her research which examines both chemical (volatile or- ganic compounds) and bio- logical (microbiome DNA) aspects of human odor for forensic identification pur- poses.
More recently, she was one of 13 students competing in the 2022 University’s 3- minute thesis final competi- tion. Her research has not only received departmental funding, but international funding as well. In addition, her research has sparked col- laborative efforts within the FIU research community. The FL-AGEP scholar and FEF McKnight Fellow will join the faculty at Framingham State University in Massachusetts as a Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow in Chemistry and hopes to encourage more women of color to pursue STEM fields. Furthermore, Chantrell has been invited to be a symposium speaker internationally in Morogoro, Tanzania this upcoming sum- mer.
Chantrell, we love you. Keep up the good work. Thank you to her village of family and friends: Her par- ents, Ayanna McBride and Charlie Frazier; her grand- parents, Richard Morris: Belinda and James Har- rist; Jackie and Charlie Frazier, her great aunt and uncle, Jessie and Kenneth Perry, special thanks for making sure she had all she needed for college; her aunt, Carla Griffith and Jada Frazier; her uncle, DJ Douchie of Buctown DJ’s; her cousin, Natanya Miller; Yolanda Cole, Louanne LittleJohn, and a host of family and friends that have supported her in many ways along the way.
