White House Names Two FAMU Students HBCU All Stars
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) has named two Florida Agricul- tural and Mechanical Univer- sity (FAMU) students 2015 “HBCU All-Stars.”
The U. S. Department of Education recently announced the names of 83 undergradu- ate, graduate, and professional students from 70 HBCUs who have been tapped to serve as ambassadors to the White House by providing outreach and communication with fel- low students about the value of education.
FAMU graduate students Ms. Gilda Brown and Ms. Jennifer Smith were se- lected as All-Stars from a pool of more than 450 applicants.
Ms. Brown, a second- year pharmacology student in the FAMU College of Phar- macy and Pharmaceutical Sci- ences master’s degree program, said she is eager to aid in the White House’s mis- sion to promote higher educa- tion in the African American

community.
According to Ms. Smith,
an Atlanta native, who is pur- suing her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction, being selected as an All-Star gives her the opportunity to meet other HBCU scholars and potentially implement joint initiatives that would benefit HBCU students and the African American community.
FAMU President Elmira Mangum, Ph.D., recognized Ms. Brown and Ms. Smith before the University commu- nity during her “State of the University” address last week.

Bounce Boy Fun Factory To Sponsor Community Event
BY LEON B. CREWS Sentinel Staff Writer
On Saturday, September 26th from 10 a. m. until 2 p. m., the Bounce Boy Fun Factory and owner, Gary Onzy, will be hosting a community event, “Love Tampa Bay Fun Fest.”
The event will be held at Columbus Plaza, 5008 East
10th Avenue, and Onzy said he’s trying to ring more events to that community and bring people together.
“This is the first of many events I have planned for the community east of 50th Street.
“We will have an author who wrote a kids book about literacy, representatives from Tampa Health Centers doing

free screenings, and help for low income families.”
Onzy will also introduce a fitness program called “Bounce Boy Inflatable Work- out.”
“It’s innovative, and it’s for the entire family to work out together.
“McDonald’s is sponsoring all the food and drinks, thanks to Cedric Christopher.”
Onzy said he deals with a lot of kids, and they don’t have much to do, especially with everything costing so much and families trying to recover from their back to school ex- penses.
“I think it makes parents a lot more at ease when they know their children are safe and doing something they enjoy.
“It’s also important to cre- ate an environment where they can interact together and bond. I hope this catches on quickly, and the number of families that take advantage of this free opportunity increases at each event.”
