Nuggets' Ty Lawson To Enter Private Alcohol Treatment After DUI
Josh Smith Joins Clippers On One-Year Deal At Veterans Minimum
Josh Smith signed a one- year deal with the Clippers for the veterans minimum worth $1.5 million.
The Los Angeles Clippers have signed free-agent forward Josh Smith, who helped elim- inate them from last season's playoffs when he was with the Houston Rockets. The Clippers announced the deal Thursday.
Smith reportedly signed a one-year contract for the veter- ans minimum worth $1.5 mil- lion. Smith "chose winning and a defined role over money."
A quiet week in NBA free agency was interrupted by a couple of notable deals Thurs- day, including Josh Smith to the Clippers. Kevin Pelton ex- plains all the moves.
Smith played 55 games for the Rockets last season after the Detroit Pistons waived him in December.
"Over my pro career I have spent a lot of time in Houston with friends and family. Over the past year, while with the Rockets, the team, fans and people of Houston have made it a second home," Smith said in a prepared statement. "I want to express my appreciation to everyone for the support and kindness they have showed me and my family while I have been here. Thank you!"
After he was released by De- troit, Smith was recruited to sign with Houston by Dwight Howard, his childhood friend. It turned out to be a solid move.
Smith scored in double dig- its in 35 of 48 games where he came off the bench, with four 20-point games during the reg- ular season. His impact was even greater in the Western Conference semifinals. With the Rockets down 3-1 in the se- ries against the Clippers, coach Kevin McHale inserted Smith into the starting lineup for Game 5, and Houston ral- lied to win the series. In a do- or-die Game 6 in L.A., Smith and Corey Brewer combined to score 29 fourth-quarter points, helping the Rockets rally from a 19-point second- half deficit to win.

DENVER -- Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson won't face DUI charges in California and Colorado until completing a 30-day residential treatment program, a Denver judge ruled Friday.
The troubled point guard at- tended a pretrial hearing Fri- day in Denver, in which his lawyer said Lawson enters treatment Saturday at Cliffside Malibu, a celebrity rehabilita- tion center in California that treats patients with addiction and psychiatric issues.
"We will be handling the personal needs of the defen- dant," said Lawson's lawyer, Harvey Steinberg, who added the program will "en- sure his sobriety."
Lawson did not speak at the hearing.
Lawson, 27, was arrested Tuesday in Los Angeles on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was arrested in Denver for the same thing in January.
"Now we have a new situa- tion that needs to be dealt with," Steinberg said Friday,
