“Tampa has a lot of different food festivals, but none of them include everyone. We have the Asian Festival, the Italian Festival, the Latin Fes- tival, but never a festival where everyone comes together. There is so much hate being preached, and disparity among

Other food vendors partici-

Recently, members of the 1970 Belmont Heights Little League were honored with the filming of a documentary enti- tled, “Breaking The Color Barrier.” It was held at Game Time in Ybor City.
The documentary was part of the Tampa Bay Rays Base- ball History Series.
During the event, Coach Wallace Dexter was reunited with team members, Charlie Davis, Nino Austin, Her- bert Greene, Ronald Harvin, James Walker, and Al “Hurly” Richard- son. They were also joined by City Councilman Frank Reddick at the ceremony.
The men discussed how a group of 12-year-olds over- came racism and segregation in the sports world, thereby changing the world of sports forever.
Coming together again after so many years, the men had the opportunity to rekin- dle friendships and reflect on such incidents in their child- hood as busing, desegregation and the integration of the Hillsborough County public schools.
John Greene said, “These
young men were the pride of our community and the am- bassadors for a peaceful future in race relations. The 1970 All- Stars were presented with a Commendation from Hillsbor- ough County Commission Chair Les Miller.
In 1970, the team broke the color barrier when they inte- grated Little League Baseball in the South, becoming the first Black team to win and place in the Little League Base- ball Southern Regional compe- tition.
Other members of the team who didn’t attend the event, but who were recognized were: Dolphus Perry, Andra Fesser, and Thomas Everett.
Deceased members of the team includes: Bruce Williams, Steve Hall, Davis Coley, Robert Mott, Herman Green, Coach Wallace Dexter, Manager Robert Dawson, and Presi- dent Benjamin F. Rouse.
As a result of the inroads made by the 1970 All-Stars, other such as former Belmont Heights stars, Dwight Gooden, Gary Sheffield, Derek Bell, Floyd Youmans, Carl Everette, Vance Lovelace went on to play professional baseball.
