USF School Of Pharmacy Receives Accreditation
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
In 2009, the University of South Florida opened the doors to its School of Phar- macy. The following year, the University applied for its ac- creditation. Its first gradua- tion ceremony was held in May 2015.
Recently, the College of Pharmacy was granted full accreditation by the Accredi- tation Council for Pharmacy Education.
The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredits Doctor of Pharmacy programs offered by Colleges and Schools of Pharmacy in the United States and other selected lo- cations.
Dr. Kevin Sneed, Dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of South Florida said, “Accreditation is one of the most important things a program can achieve. Without accredita- tion, students are not eligible for board licenseship. We’ve

achieved that. Now that we are accredited, our students can take state board exami- nations and are eligible for federal residency programs.
“We have completed all 30 standards and that shows we are offering a qualified program that our team of staff and faculty has assem- bled.”
The program’s accredita- tion status will last for two years. After that, the Accred- itation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) will revisit
and complete an evaluation of the program. It will then determine if the college will retain its accreditation sta- tus.
The founder of the Col- lege of Pharmacy at the Uni- versity of South Florida, Dr. Sneed also serves as a Sen- ior Associate Vice President for USF Health.
He obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology with a concentration in Mi- crobiology from the Univer- sity of Central Florida.
Dr. Sneed continued his education at Xavier Univer- sity of Louisiana, College of Pharmacy, where he received his Doctor of Pharmacy De- gree. He is also the recipient of several other clinical and leadership awards. He com- pleted an Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Practice Specialty Residency at Bay Pines Vet- eran’s Administration Med- ical Center.
Dr. Sneed is married to U. S. District Judge Julie Sneed and they are the pa rents of two children.

Organizations Join Forces To Launch New Initiative
LifeLink of Florida has joined forces with the Associ- ation for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation (AMAT) and Donate Life America (DLA) to launch “Donate Life ECHO.” The new national ob- servance designed to reach multicultural communities. ECHO, which stands for: Every Community Has Op- portunity, is being launched to bolster engagement with African American, Asian/Pa- cific Islander, Latino, and other multicultural commu- nities.
The ECHO campaign has two objectives: to focus on the power of sharing one’s per- sonal decision to register as an organ, eye and tissue donor with members of an in- dividual’s community; the second is to encourage regis- tered donors to ask members of their personal networks and extended communities to register as donors. Through the ECHO concept of repeti- tion—with people sharing the life-affirming message of do- nation within their commu- nity—more lives will be saved and healed.
“Currently, the national transplant waiting list boasts more than 123,000 individu- als awaiting a lifesaving transplant with more than half representing multicul- tural communities,” says Ruth Duncan Bell, Senior Vice President, LifeLink.
“Echoing the message of organ and tissue donation will result in more lives being

saved.”
The two-week observance
will be held during the second and third full weeks in July. This year’s inaugural obser- vance will be held July 12 – July 25. The need for in- creased education efforts and new strategic approaches is a critical step toward increas- ing the number of registered donors in multicultural com- munities.
In Florida, more than 5,500 individuals are await- ing an organ transplant and thousands of others are in need of gifts from a tissue re- cipient. Help end their wait. ECHO the message of organ and tissue donation in your community and encourage individuals to sign up to be a donor.
