City Council Approves Final Vote On Panhandling Ordinance
On Thursday, members of the City Council held their final vote to repeal the Panhandling Ordinance put into place in November 2011. The vote was 6-0. City Council Chairman Frank Reddick was absent.
Last month, City Council members voted to repeal the ordinance after a lawsuit. The Homeless Helping Homeless, Inc., filed a lawsuit against the City of Tampa, contending that the ordinance prevented them from raising funds for their or- ganization.
The County Ordinance pro- hibits anyone from conducting business in the roadway. The City of Tampa now falls under the jurisdiction of the Hillsbor- ough County Panhandling Or- dinance.
City Attorney Julia Mandell stated that the City Council has the option to re- visit the ordinance in the fu- ture.
