BY MONIQUE STAMPS Sentinel Staff Writer
Reverend Dr. H. L. Daniels has been a dedicated servant of the Tampa Bay community for more than fifty-eight years. During those years he has pastored at New Friendship Mis- sionary Baptist Church for his entire career.
Dr. Daniels was one of nine children born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Booker T. and Mat- tie Daniels. Dr. Daniels is married to Sister Jennie L. Daniels and together they have 5 children and many grandchildren.
He was called to lead Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in June 1964.
In 1975, Dr. Daniels was guided to lead the church into a bus ministry, and from that min- istry, 200 were baptized, and there were 200 in Sunday School. To accommodate the classes, some were held in buses, and under shade trees in the yard. Three vans were used, along with one station wagon, to transport the children and adults to Sunday School and Church services on Sunday mornings.
Continuing to be led by the Holy Spirit, the land where the new church located at at the church, 3201 E. Lake Ave., now sits was pur- chased and was paid for in December of 1981. Then, on October 26, 1986, New Friendship marched into its new building.
In November of 2002, the gymnasium, called the Reverend Dr. H. L. Daniels Community Outreach Center, was completed.
Dr. Daniels has held numerous positions in the ministry. Those positions include: Immedi- ate Past Moderator of the Mount Pilgrim Mis- sionary Baptist Association; Past President of Congress Number One; Vice-President of the District Congress of Christian Workers; Advisor to the Senior Women of Mount Pilgrim; Ministry Leader, and he also served as Camp Director of the Mount Pilgrim campsite.
Dr. Daniels states, “I have served the com- munity for 58 years – been some difficulties along the way, but we survived them. Over the

years we have knocked on almost every door in West Tampa and the Jackson Heights commu- nity. I have always had a heart for people and wanted to make sure that they knew about God and salvation. Over the years the members have been faithful and supportive, and I want the church to continue move forward. I prayed about my transition to retirement, and the Lord sent my son-in-law, Dr. Kendrix Gardner. I feel blessed. We have planted many seeds on this corner and the harvest is still ripe.”
Dr. Gardner and his wife, Lady Tasnee Gardner feel very fortunate. Lady Gardner is the youngest child of Dr. and Sis. Daniels.
Tasnee Gardner stated, “As once the ‘baby’ of the church, I had no idea that I would one day follow in my mother’s footsteps. From childhood my Dad has always been the Pastor, so it is a transition for all of us.”
A program honoring the Daniels for their 58 years of service will be held on Saturday, June 18th, at 6 p.m. If you have been impacted by them or this ministry in any way you are invited to share in the ce- lebration.
