Three Complete Basic Training In U. S. Air Force
Three individuals with ties to the Tampa Bay Area have completed basic training as members of the U. S. Air Force. They all participated in their respective graduation ceremonies at the Joint San Antonio- Lackland Air Force Base, in San Antonio, Texas.
Airman First Class Dreu A. Layton, Airman Austin F. Maze, and Airman David Dos Santos completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare prin- ciples and skills.
The Airmen also earned four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Airman Layton is the son of Delia Espaillat, of Land O' Lakes, and Ronald Layton, of Tampa. He is the stepson of Justin Wallace, of Land O' Lakes.
Airman Layton graduated from Tampa Bay Technical High School in 2013.
Airman Maze is the son of Steve P. and Carrie B. Odell, of Tampa. He graduated from Steinbrenner High School in 2015.
Airman Dos Santos is the son of Agustin and Nohelis Dos Santos, of North Chesterfield, VA. He is married to Yolanda Dos Santos.
Airman Dos Santos graduated from Clover Hill High School, in Chesterfield, VA, in 2008.
Air Force Officer Chosen As Command Center Member Of The Quarter
Air Force Master Sergeant Nikki N. Purvis has been selected as the U. S. Transportation Command Senior Service Member of the Quarter. The honor is for the October through December 2015 period.
Master Sgt. Purvis is the daughter of Frank and Lowanda Broady, of McColl, SC. She is married to Dedric Purvis, of Tampa. She graduated from Marlboro County High School, in Bennettsville, South Carolina, in 1996. Master Sgt. Purvis continued her education and earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Ashford University, in Clinton,
Iowa, in 2015.
She is currently serving as a Section Chief, Strategic Movement with
Joint Communications Support Element, at MacDill Air Force Base, in Tampa. She has been a member of the military for 19 years.
The selection for the honor is based on the honoree’s exemplary duty performance, job knowledge, leadership qualities, teamwork, sig- nificant self-improvement, personal achievements, notable accom- plishments, and community service and support.
Three Complete U. S. Army Basic Infantry Training
Three young adults with ties to the Tampa Bay Area have completed basic infantry training. The respective graduation ceremonies for the members of the U. S. Army took place at Fort Jackson, in South Car- olina.
Private Zahtwon M. Herron, Private Alexander J. Lopez, and National Guard Private Marcus A. Melendez completed a nine-week training course that focused on the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military cour- tesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.
Private Herron is the daughter of Qwantina Scott, of Tampa. Her other Tampa relatives are Kimberly Dean and Stanley Scott. She graduated from Middleton High School in 2014.
Private Lopez graduated from Sickles High School in 2014.
Private Melendez is the grandson of Orlando S. Esqujarvosa and Doris B. Clerch, of Tampa. He graduated from Spoto High School in 2015.
