Colonnade Restaurant Sold To Developers
THE COLONNADE – 1935
One of the few remaining Tampa seafood icons has been sold to developers.
The Colonnade Restaurant on Bayshore Boulevard has been bought by a real estate de- velopment partnership, and after 80 years, is now closed for business.
The restaurant at 3401 Bayshore Boulevard started as a drive-in during the 1930s, and it has been purchased by Ascentia Real Estate Development and Batson-Cook Development Company for a residential project.
On July 3, 1935, Lois (Mamie) White- side and her sons, Richard, Jr. and Jack, opened the Colonnade Restaurant. The two boys were Plant High School students and the restaurant was soon a favorite local hangout for teenagers.
The Colonnade offered a variety of Ameri- cana favorites, including hamburgers fried chicken and a colonnade original – an olive in your coca cola.
After World War II, the restaurant began serving what it is now famous for fresh seafood. While stationed in San Francisco dur- ing the war, Jack became inspired by the West

Coast area’s many seafood restaurants. Avid fishermen the brothers were happy to add an array of fresh fish and shellfish entrees to the menu.
Mamie Whiteside insisted on the fresh- est and finest ingredients and the family con- tinued to offer their patrons the best of the land and sea.
For five generations, the Whiteside fam- ily has established a tradition of serving a su- perior product at family prices.
