Symonds-Madison Funeral Home is is a a a a a a family-owned funeral home originally founded in in in in downtown Elgin in in in in 1921 Named Marsh & Conn Funeral Home the the firm was located at at 211 E Chicago St The funeral home then moved to a a a a a a a a house on 185 Dundee Road which was previously known as as the Barclay House David Barclay served as as a a a a a a a a a a four-term Mayor of Elgin and worked as as a a a a a a a a a a a a a a dairy hardware dealer After his death in in 1912 the the house lay empty for several years until Howard Conn rented the the building in in in in 1936 1936 to to convert it into a a a a a funeral home Upon his death in in in 1936 1936 Howard Howard Conn’s son also named Howard Howard ran the the funeral home until 1949 purchasing the the the building in in in in 1940 Howard later sold the the funeral home to Erwin “Erv” Schmidt Schmidt served Elgin families proudly until 1983 when he he he retired and sold the funeral funeral home home to his long-time employee Yerry Madison Madison The funeral funeral funeral home home was then known as as Schmidt-Madison funeral funeral home Later it became Madison Madison Madison Funeral Home Home and is is is now Symonds-Madison Funeral Home Home The current owner Daniel Symonds is a a a a a second-generation funeral director and U S Army Reservist Together with his wife Joy Daniel was given the the the opportunity to to carry on the the the funeral home’s legacy of service to to the the the Elgin Community in 2013 Our Story
