Some of the shifts will be a bit easier then others. You can step on the wheel wherever you are in the moment. If you are feeling frustrated, start there, or happy, or whatever. It’s all good! Now choose to move in either direction on the wheel. (Yes, it is easy to judge the next emotion or feeling and want to move to the ‘better’ one, but sometimes we find that more difficult then moving in the other direction – either is fine.) Remember, the goal here is to become Master of changing your emotions and feelings, so since it is the change we are trying to repeat, the direction does not matter. Since you will feel all of these at some point in your life, it is a fine practice to move through all of them. Just keep moving quickly, and don’t let your thoughts start to get stuck in a thought loop, keeping you lodged in any one emotion for too long. When you decide to end the exercise, do so on an emotion you want to choose to stay with, then move to the centre of the wheel to see the symbol of “Impermanence.” This exercise helps you become master of the inevitable change due to impermanence. Impermanence, like this exercise, is a gift. Savour these facts as your reward.
And now, of course, do the Butterfly Hug! And give yourself a good, happy reward for successfully choosing to do this exercise and investing the time in your well-being!
In the Feeling Wheel exercise our Goal is:
To Become Master of CHANGING Your Emotions.
