HOW TO MANAGE ANXIETY & END PANIC ATTACKS
STEP ONE
The split second you know Homer is showing up, respond with precisely these two sentences:
1. “Homer!* You wanted my attention; you’ve got it!”
2. “Homer* you want to keep me safe, I am going to help!”
*Substitute in here the name you have chosen.
Don’t make up your own sentences. Just memorize these
sentences and stick with it!
Go back right now and say these sentences out loud a few dozen times. Remember: Intention, Repetition and Reward! You need this sentence on the tip of your tongue for future use.
These sentences work. It is clear, concise, and the perfect answer to Homer. It is the opposite of ignoring or fighting with Homer. Give him what he wants. After all, he just wants your attention and to have you be safe.
Many patients report back to me that this first line strat- egy, once they know all you now know about the brain, neuro- plasticity, anxiety and panic, provides them with instant relief. Some patients say that this sentence alone can reduce a panic attack by as much as 80 percent. Now, that is not everyone, but it is a fine testament to the fact we are on the right path here!
Being safe is part two of what Homer wants, so let’s get on that now!
“Homer! You wanted my attention; you’ve got it!” “Homer you want to keep me safe, I am going to help!”
