20th century, in particular, the liberation from the naturalistic and representational form, as well as the subsequent rise of Modernism, are related to the aesthetics of Late Byzan- tine painting in the most profound way. Thus, Kandinsky’s overall creative experience can indeed be seen as contributory to the understanding of the diachronic character of Late Byzantine painting.
