The diagram represents Malevich’s Late Byzantine experience by interconnecting four particular points of art history: Malevich’s Self Portrait (c.1910), Christ the Pantokrator at Daphni (c.1080), the traditional iconographical theme of the Virgin Hodigitria – common to the period of Late Byzantine art,
and Malevich’s Black Square (1915).
