Byzantine Painting through Contemporary Eyes
Mounting an already painted canvas-composition on wood was something that Roth- ko did quite often. At other times, just like in the work presented in image 35, he mount- ed his paper compositions on wooden boards or on wood fiberboard panels. These prac- tices are comparable to the technique employed in Byzantine iconography, where the piece of canvas is glued on a wooden board and then prepared with a gesso (which in- cludes the rabbit-skin glue).
