The Serbian Orthodox Bishops in the USA commissioned this most important liturgi- cal book to be published in 2021 in English and Serbian. The Divine and Sacred Gos- pel is a 1100-page, full color, hardbound book with dozens of illuminated medieval initials and eight beautiful icons of the Evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The handmade Gospel Book Cover (silver or gold plated) is masterfully made in Greece with decorative carving com- plete with icons of the Crucifixion, 4 Evan- gelists on the front and the Resurrection on the back. The Gospel is not a good, ben- eficial, edifying book. It is not, as it has been called, “the king of books”. It is the book of life. It is the Word of God. It is the voice of the Trinitarian God treasured in the Church and conveyed by the Church and through the Church to the world, for the salvation of humanity and the world. For the Church, the Gospel has always been and always is the Image in words of the God-Man Bridegroom and Savior, the Image in paper and ink. This is in any case why so great honor is attributed to the Gospel: it is placed on the fearful altar, in-
deed in its center; it is covered with gold and silver ornaments, studded with pre- cious stones; it is taken in procession with the festal proclamation and command: “Wisdom, let us attend!”; it is kissed and venerated etc. Furthermore, the Holy Gos- pel and the Epistle readings are chanted, not simply read. The chanting signifies that it is not a normal reading of this world, but a harmonious melody of theology, the product of the musical harp of the All-Ho- ly Spirit whose chords are the Evangelists. This book is a living testimony to the phe- nomenal efforts of the Serbian Orthodox Church to create an exceptional spiritual and material culture, preserving its heri- tage of the Americas. This book, therefore, belongs in every Orthodox Parish, Chapel, Monastery—and our homes. It will serve as a symbol to us all and to all future Ser- bian Orthodox generations.
