Chapter 27 (243) GOSPEL OF MATTHEW

hen, the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the praetorium and gathered the whole gar- rison against him. They stripped him and
put a scarlet robe on him made a crown of thorns and placed it on his head, and a reed in his right hand. They knelt down before him and mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” They also spat on him, took the reed and struck him on the head. When they had mocked him, they re- moved the robe from him, put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him. As they were coming out, the soldiers found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, and they compelled him to go with them and to carry the cross.
