Chapter 1 (675) GOSPEL OF JOHN
o one *has seen God at any time. The only- -begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father, he has explained him. This is John’s
testimony, when the Jews sent priests and Lev- ites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” He admitted and did not deny it, plainly admit- ting, “I am not the Christ!” They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not!” Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.” Therefore, they asked him, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” John said, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, make straight the way of Lord, as Isaiah the prophet said.” Those who had been sent were from the Pharisees. They asked him, “Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Eli- jah, nor the prophet?” John answered them, “I baptize in water, but among you stands one whom you do not know. He is the one who comes after me, who is ranked before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.” These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
