this, and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said. Now when he was in Jeru- salem at the Passover, during the feast, many be- gan to believe in his Name, observing the signs which he was performing. But Jesus did not trust himself to them, because he knew everyone, and because he did not need a witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.

ow, there was *one of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night, and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God be- cause no one can perform the signs
which you accomplish unless God is with him.” Jesus answered him, “Amen, amen, I tell you, un- less one is born anew, he cannot see the King- dom of God.” Nicodemus asked him, “How can someone who is old be born? Can one enter a second time into his mother’s womb, and be born anew?” Jesus answered, “Amen, amen, I tell you;
