selves, Peter was with them, standing and warm- ing himself. Meanwhile, the high priest asked Je- sus about his disciples, and about his teaching. Jesus answered him, “I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues, and in the temple, where the Jews always meet. I said nothing in se- cret! Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I told them. Behold, these people know what I said.” When Jesus had said this, one of the officers who was standing by slapped him with his hand saying, “Do you answer the high priest like that?” Jesus replied, “If I have spoken evil, testify to the evil; but if (I have spoken) well why do you strike me?” Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas, the ruling high priest. Now, while Simon Peter was standing and warming himself, people said to him, “You are not also one of his disciples, are you?” Peter denied it, and said, “I am not!” One of the servants of the high priest, being a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Did not I see you in the garden with him?” At this, Peter denied it again, and imme- diately the rooster crowed. Then, Jesus was taken from Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was early, and the Jews themselves did not enter into the Praetorium in order not to be made ritually im- pure and to be able to eat the Passover.
