Strategies to Activate Prior Knowledge
I MUA I TE PĀNUI
In the before-reading stage, use tasks and strategies to motivate the reader to engage in the reading process. One way to motivate the reader is to help them to activate their prior knowledge of the topic. In general, the teacher or parent can help create a focus and to set a purpose for the reading. The following ideas can be adapted as required to suit the learning objectives and student needs.
The teacher can help prepare students for their readings by anticipating student needs. This could include:
• Previewing the story and determining which concepts are essential.
• Reading over the material with an eye to student needs. How much foundation
building will the students need to understand these concepts?
• Asking "Where are the trouble spots in this story?", “What are the potential new words in this story?”
• Noting resources offered by the text, such as the glossary and end-of-chapter.
