Examples of Before-Reading Activities
1. First Five
Look at the first five pictures of the story (including the cover picture) with students and discuss what they see, and think is happening. After the fifth picture, ask the students what they think may happen next.
2. What Would I Like to Know?
After discussing the title and the cover picture, ask the students to identify what they would like to find out about the topic.
3. Language Features in Focus
Introduce the students to some of the language features of the text (for example, recount, descriptive) and give them some examples such as, past tense expressions, sequencing expressions, third-person voice, first-person voice, and verbs.
