AQ. What do you like best about the ENT specialty?
Dr. Thomson: Many things! Most of all, I like the opportunity to work with patients of all ages. Especially younger patients, particularly children. When I treat children, I feel like I am treating the entire family. When
a child is sick, the entire family is affected and relieving a child’s pain and suffering brings relief to the entire family. Also, ENT involves treating patients medically and surgically. It allows me to practice a greater breadth of medicine, which I find rewarding as well as challenging.
Q. What makes Upson ENT stand out?
Dr. Thomson: That is an easy one! We have a very caring, dedicated experienced staff. Emphasis on caring. We are completely dedicated to taking the best care of every patient. Our goal is to make sure every patient feels that our only goal is their health and well-being.
Q. What is the biggest lesson you have learned in your career?
Dr. Thomson: Listen to my patients. When a patient comes to see me, they don’t feel well. Also, their appointment with me is most likely the most important part of their day. I have learned to let them speak, and to listen. I want to learn not only about their ENT concern, but about whatever is on their mind that day. I approach them more as individuals than simply patients.
Q. What are your hobbies?
Dr. Thomson: I enjoy reading (especially non-fiction such as sports, science and nature), doing crossword puzzles, playing cards, and golf. I especially like birdwatching and have traveled many places in North and Central America to see new birds. I love hiking and backpacking. I really enjoy comedy, movies and TV shows. I also love to attend live sports events, especially baseball games. Most of all, nights and time off, I enjoy spending time with my wife, Maggie.
Q. What advice would you give to future ENT physicians?
Dr. Thomson: Most of all, treat every patient as if they were one of your own family members. Listen to them carefully, and try to understand what makes them unique and special.
Also, always remember to treat the whole patient, not just the ENT issue at hand.
