FROM BRIGANTINE DOWN TO CAPE MAY POINT, and even along some of the bay beaches, the main topic of conversation in New Jersey’s Southern Shore communities revolves around the beach. Some folks prefer remote beaches, others lean toward beaches with athletic facilities, while still others favor beaches that come with the familiarity of being visited by several generations of the same family. Although there are countless options for entertainment and recreation, let’s face it: the beaches in the
region are second to none and offer a beautiful, refreshing respite from the hustle and bustle of the hot working world. They are the main reason people visit New Jersey’s Southern Shore Region. These oases are where visitors spend the day enjoying the ever-changing ocean, gentle surf, and shifting sand.
Beaches have distinct personalities, and most beachgoers have a preference, not just for a particular resort but even a specific beach. What’s your preference? There are
beaches that cater to sunbathing, swimming, surfing, fishing, kayaking, or even a game of volleyball. Many resorts now provide special accommodations for people with disabilities, including reserved parking spaces, ramps, surf chairs that can be rolled onto the beach, and even beach transport to the water’s edge.. Facilities vary from town to town, so call ahead to ensure a particular beach can meet any special needs.
Lifeguards protect most ocean beaches during the busy summer season, and visitors are urged to swim only when guards are on duty. A few beaches even have extended hours in mid-summer. If you prefer less crowded conditions, hit the beach early in the morning or late afternoon. Bring your sunscreen and a good book, and you’re bound to have fun.
Atlantic City’s shores hug a backdrop of glass and neon that lights up the sky. With a glittering line of casinos adding energy and charisma to the beachfront, just a few steps separate the roar of the surf from the sounds of slot machines. Atlantic City beaches are interspersed with piers, including the historic Steel Pier, where visitors can enjoy a fresh cocktail, great boardwalk fare, and a ride on The Wheel, which stands 227 feet tall, providing spectacular views of Atlantic City
