CASE STUDY Centennial Student Union Ballroom
EPA Audio Visual, Inc. was proud to partner with Minnesota State University, Mankato to design and integrate essential audio-vi- sual enhancements within the Centennial Student Union Ballroom. The Ballroom is the premium event venue on campus uti- lized for lectures, conferences, career and community expos, festivals, banquets and wedding receptions. The latest improve- ments provide further technology capabil- ities and visual impact to the heavily uti- lized space. The system features the latest generation of Sony Professional FHZ Laser projectors with an unprecedented deploy- ment of 17 units representing the largest single environment Sony Laser installation within the United States to date!
Sony’s latest projection technology uti- lizes a 3LCD, Laser light engine capable of stunning image quality, “Reality Creation” super-resolution processing and near maintenance-free 20K hour duty cycle. The system backbone is provided by a Crestron DigitalMediaTM video switcher and 3-series control processor, capable of managing the 25 high definition source inputs with the ability to matrix individual sources to
display end-points as well as “canvasing” of custom designed computer content for breathtakingly immersive video throughout the entire 10,000 square foot room.
“It’s real HD now,” said Ryan Strelow, CSU technical coordinator who worked with EPA. “The projectors now use lasers rather than lamps. They are twice as bright as the original lamps.”
Great effort was put into the develop- ment of a customized user interface that accommodated the complex capabilities and unique functions of the system while maintaining ease of use. These functions include five divisible room layout config- urations which seamlessly route program and speech audio to each zone, matrixing of any source to one or multiple projectors and lighting system management. Multiple touch panel controllers were deployed to enable wireless control directly within the space as well as booth/operator assist-
ed control to facilitate everything from simple to the most demanding events as determined by size, scope and application. Visual impact, “wow” factor, was para- mount however, the system accomplishes

the goal of elegantly integrating with the environment to deliver state-of-the-art performance and user-friendly operation.
“This provides us with a lot more trouble- shooting tools that we had before. It allows our tech staff to more effectively diagno- sis the system from anywhere with the ballroom space,” Strelow said. “The work EPA did just makes everything run so much smoother.”
