Marianne's 1020OceanStreet,SantaCruz,(831)458-1447. www. mariannesicecream.com Marianne's is the grande dame of Santa Cruz ice cream, offering scoops, shakes, and sundaes at its shop since 1958. Marianne's serves 75 avors at any given time, including black licorice, macapuno (baby coconut) and the signature 1020 (fudge-swirled caramel ice cream laced with Oreos). The company supplies ice cream to more than 300 restaurants, scoop shops, groceries, and special events. (For instance, Marianne's makes the garlic ice cream available at the Gilroy Garlic Festival and San Francisco's The Stinking Rose restaurant. Squeamish readers should note that it is only available by special order.) Diehard fans can get their x by the quart at select grocery stores.
Polar Bear 389 Coral Street, Santa Cruz , (831) 425-1108 www.santacruzpolarbear.com. Established in 1975, this family-owned company makes more than 100 avors of frozen treats, ve gallons at a time. You can nd prepacked quarts and Polar Bear Paws at certain local markets, but for a
custom-made ice cream cake or mud pie, a visit to Polar Bear's retail shop (open weekdays near Harvey West Park) is a must. Polar Bear has produced an exclusive line of avors for Marini's Candies in downtown Santa Cruz since 2008, including the notorious Vegan's Nightmare (maple ice cream laden with Marini's chocolate-covered bacon chunks).
THE NEW SCHOOL
ThePennyIceCreamery 913CedarStreet,SantaCruz,(831)204-2523. www. thepennyicecreamery.com. Kendra Baker worked as a pastry chef at David Kinch’s Michelin-starred Manresa in Los Gatos before partnering with Zachary Davis to open The Penny Ice Creamery in 2010. The ice cream base is pasteurized in-house, allowing Baker to adjust its avor pro le to best complement each recipe. Seasonal avors tend to vary from week to week, but visitors can count on a variety of ice creams, vegan creations such as the decadent chocolate sorbet, and novelties such as bon bons.
The company has expanded to include a downtown kiosk and a new Pleasure Point location, as well as The Picnic Basket (The Penny’s sister shop near the Boardwalk).
Kelly'sFrenchBakery 402IngallsStreet,SantaCruz,(831)423-9059. www. kellysfrenchbakery.com. While Kelly's has been a beloved Santa Cruz xture for more than thirty years, it is relatively new to the ice cream scene. Pastry chef Kelly Sanchez, the granddaughter of ice cream shop owners, began creating and serving ice cream at the bakery in 2010. Visitors to the Swift Street Courtyard have quickly warmed to such cool avors as caramel-almond and tutti frutti (inspired by Sanchez's grandmother's recipe). Kelly's full pastry kitchen means that mix-ins such as brownie chunks are made on-site, a rarity in commercial ice cream parlors.
Mission Hill Creamery 1101B Paci c Avenue, Santa Cruz, (831) 216-6421. www. missionhillcreamery.com. Mission Hill Creamery has embodied the ideals of Dave Kumec since its 2010 opening. The Paris-trained chef-owner's insistence on organic ingredients shines through in such avors as Turkish coffee and salted caramel. Mission Hill was acclaimed as one of America's top artisanal ice cream companies
by Mother Earth News in 2011, and the company's rst wholesale customer was the Monterey Bay Aquarium (which continues to serve the ice cream to its restaurant patrons today). Mission Hill Creamery ice cream is available by the pint at natural food stores throughout northern California, and in in nite permutations at the company's recently-opened downtown scoop shop.
