8HISTORY OF HAWLEY While Hawley may seem like a tiny little town along the Route 6 Highway, it has a rich and remarkable history. Like all of northeast Pennsylvania, its roots are tied to lumber and farming. Over the years our economy has been nourished and fed by textiles, glass, and more. What we are most famous for is the transportation by barge and later railroad, for anthracite coal and Pennsylvania bluestone, all headed east for the building of New York City. But what most modern-day visitors know us for is the lake! Lake Wallenpaupack covers approximately 5,700 acres. It is 13 miles long and boasts 52 miles of shoreline. The lake has six recreation areas featuring hundreds of acres of forest lands, wildlife, walking trails, campsites and boat slips. Our little town is the lake region’s downtown and welcomes visitors and residents year-round.
