Coppell High School Leo Club volunteers at Sports Extravaganza

The Coppell High School Leo Club volunteered at the Sports Extravaganza, held on October 20th and 21st at South Grand Prairie and Nimitz High Schools. The Sports Extravaganza is an annual event for blind and visually impaired students from over 55 school districts in Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. It is aimed at lowering the barriers encountered by blind and visually impaired youngsters in physical activities and athletic events.
Coppell High School Leo Club members Melissa Lucena, Jenny Vu, Ivan Carrillo and Isabel Mascarenhas volunteered as line judges for the goalball competition. Goalball is a team sport designed specifically for blind and visually impaired athletes. Participants compete in teams of three, and try to throw a ball that has bells imbedded in it into the opponents’ goal.

“Working as a line judge for goalball was really intense,” said Coppell High School Leo Club President Isabel Mascarenhas. “The athletes were so invested in the game, we really wanted to help make it a great experience for them.”
The Coppell High School Leo Club is a service organization for high school students affiliated with the Coppell Lions Club. Coppell Lions Club members also volunteer at the Sports Extravaganza, and sponsor a goalball team every year.
