This year a new sport. Varsity Cross Country, under the guidance of Coach M. Gale Hoffman, was added to Wardlaw's fall athletic docket. Out standing among those representing the Maroon at the meets were Walter Ritchie, and Captain Tom Stevens, the fastest and most consistent run ners of this new team. Coach Hoffman's group ran well in its first contest against the PLAINFIELD HIGH SCHOOL SOPHOMORES, although losing
the meet, 22 to 33. In a triangle meet at MONT CLAIR COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL, Wardlaw placed SECOND, a fine showing against long established opponents. In the next to the last meet of their schedule, the varsity held another contest with the PLAINFIELD HIGH SCHOOL SOPHOMORES, but could not outdistance their foes, losing by the score of 21 to 34.
The season closed with the STATE MEET at BORDENTOWN where Wardlaw, with 198 points placed EIGHTH in the final reckoning. Walter Ritchie's performance was outstanding, placing nineteenth in a field of fifty-five contestants in the cross country race. As track has engendered great interest at Wardlaw, it is expected that many more boys will participate in the 1961 season which has
a most encouraging outlook.
