Varsity soccer proved to be one of the most suc­ cessful and exciting sports this year at W-H. A 9-4-3 team record was enough to give the team a second place finish in the prep "B” conference. Certainly what made the difference was the experience many of the team members possessed. Mark Gruba and Andy Michel, both first team all-staters, played for the team when they were freshmen.
Jeff Shrager (1st team All-State), Matt DelVento (2nd team), and Blake Sturcke (honorable mention) starred for the varsity when they were sophomores. Along with this was the well-balanced skill of the team. Vincent Chen (2nd team). Bill Callahan (honor­ able mention), Todd Kaplan (honorable mention), and Chris McCall were potent forces on the field,
jack Sharp (2nd team), who could have played any­ thing from sweeper to striker, was of unlimited help in his quickness and athletic abilities. Andy Michel's return to W-H saw him as the best defenseman in tbe preps in statewide recognition.
Tbe top ranked team in the "B" division was Pen­ nington whom W -H tied 2-2. W -H was also the team that ended Morristown-Beard's unbeaten streak this year with a 3-1 victory. The Rams were seeded #2 in the state tournament but were upset by #3 seed Morristown Beard in the semi-finals ending their hopes of winning a first-ever soccer state champion­ ship for W-H. Goalie Craig Gilgallon, who received Most Improved Honors as well as All-State Honor­ able mention, came in as a first-time goalie and re­ corded six shut-outs. The team scored a total of 54 goals this year, second ever in W-H history.
