 Junior Red Cross
Our Red Cross Unit began the year with two beautiful gifts, one from Miss Edith Alellick, our Alumnte President, of $69.25, part of the pro
ceeds of a recital that she gave at Lake Placid in August: and the other of $ 1 1 5 . 0 0 , that our Senior President had earned during the summer. Later the Alumnas League ga\ e us $100.00, which was a great boon. We added to these gifts in various ways. Some of us made and sold bags, some closed windows in the early morning, some gave a play, some helped with the waiting, some added largely to the profits of the pound, one, a Senior, contributed $25.00 from her Liberty Bond diviciends, others helped out of pocket-money. All this, together with gifts from grown-ups and our profits from the Fair, netted us $1,370.36 to date, so that we could spend $315.48 for materials and still have $45.00 for Christmas dinners for the poor, $36.00 for Pine Mountain, $50.00 for the Red Cross Shop, $12.56 for broth for influenza patients, and $800.00 for the Children’s
Ward.
In the fall we were \-ery busy with surgical dressings. Of these the
resident girls made the greater part, and we turned in 17,403 before Christmas, besides 370 influenza masks. After Christmas we made dress ings only at special request from Headquarters, and turned in only 4,008. But we knitted i 13 pairs of socks, 14 pairs of stockings, 39 sweaters, 2
pairs of wristlets, i helmet, 9 afghans, 3 stump socks, 13 pairs of bootees, made 10 pillows, 20 property hags, and 43 s handkerchiefs, and collected about 350 garments for Pine Mountain and the Belgians and the Plainfield
poor.
We also combined with the Seminary and Mount St. Mary’s, the
»•
Wardlaw School, the High School, and the North Plainfield Schools, and gave a course of lectures. They were most interesting and told us a great deal about the League of Nations, the Freedom of the Seas, the Rights
of Small Nations, and Industrial Politics. President Neilson of Smith
