Popular politics in action: in 1890 a new party, the Populists, came into power in the Midwest, calling for economic reforms and the introduction of a currency based on silver rather than gold. After a disputed election in Kansas in 1893 the Populists barricaded themselves in the state house, to be driven out by armed Republicans (above) who eventually won the day. (19)
