Coach Charles Brown and the merpeople faced a big challenge: How do we pull a winning season while miss ing most of last year’s top scorers? Ape, Guppy, Lisa, Patti, Margarita and the rest showed the way — a youth movementl Under the steady leadership of Cap tain Julie Casagrande, and the madcap rantings of the second-year coach, this year’s workouts toughened up, and so did the team.
The result? Last year 4-8, this year 7-7. "If the season had gone longer, we would have won more,” said Coach Brown, struggling to have a cancelled meet resche duled. Additions to the team like strong freshman Tom Murray, MVP swimmer, and Patti Wysock only galva nized existing standouts like Lisa Minard and Marcel Lissinna placed, this year three swimmers did. The team as a whole also did well in the states.
The future? Bright! Most of this year’s best swim mers are freshmen and sophomores, both they and the coach will come back with more experience, more en thusiasm, and more to shoot for — a winning season, next year. The personalities, Karl "The Ram” Munzel, Mark "Muscles” Petrocelli, Charles, "Chuck” Brown, the pool, the spirit, next year could be the Year of the Sharks.
