Basketball
How can one describe the state champion basketball team? How about Terrificl, Fantasticl and Awesome! to name just a few adjectives. This year’s team has set school records left and right. Led by co-captains Greg Boff and Brian Flynn they achieved a new school record of 21-3, and they were able to win 13 of those games in a row while holding their opponents to an average of 43 points per game. In addition they emerged as the cham pions of the Dwight Englewood Tournament. But one of the most amazing feats was their victories over Rutgers Prep and Pennington in the States, although they had lost to them previously during the regular season. "This team was really a team, all of the mem bers worked together to make all of their wins a com bined effort.” stated Coach Ray Kovonuk, who coached his 200th win at Wardlaw-Hartridge this year, against Morrison-Beard, Therefore, instead of citing one most valuable player of the year, Coach Kovonuk awarded the MVP to the whole varsity team, comprised of Greg Boff, Brian Flynn, David Hall, David Lombardi, Irving Greene, Brian Culp, Tom Yoder, Rob Darden, Sean McMullen, Brad Buzzi, Mark Oberschewen, and David Joy. With this gesture he emphasized how valuable teamwork and coherence were in shaping one of Ward- law-Hartridge’s best basketball teams ever.
