SCIENCE
Incredible scientific progress of the past few decades has brought changes to our entire way of life. With these changes has arisen a need for a fuller, more comprehensive grasp of basic scientific principles on the part of the average citizen.
In order to meet this challenge, the Wardlaw science program has been expanded and emphasized to a greater degree than ever before. Under the direction of Mrs. Ann Kelly, assisted by Mr. William Campbell, Mr. Edward Cos grove, Mr. DeWitt Cook, and Mr. Edward Gunther, the science program has been broadened to cover every grade in the school, beginning with the lower school and con tinuing through twelfth grade.
Emphasis has been shifted to more extensive experi mentation and first-hand experience. Science courses now Include considerable laboratory work, along with occa sional field trips to museums and other places of scientific interest.
With this has come, necessarily, impressive physical expansion. With the help of contributions from individuals and from corporations, new equipment and other much- needed facilities have been added. These have included a second fully equipped laboratory.
ART
The Wardlaw art program Is one of the most popular school arctivities. Although classes are mandatory in only the lower and middle schools, many high school students also haunt the art room. Art is supervised by Mrs. Elizabeth Gosch.
Students are introduced in their art classes to a number of art forms. Painting, drawing, carv ing, sketching, and clay work are taught. For the first time this year, an Art Club was formed in the middle school. Members met during their free periods in order to have more time to work on projects.
Art work from ail grades is displayed in the halls; and students, of course, do all of the art work for the Beacon and for the Maroon and Gold.
The art program will undoubtedly continue to be both successful and popular. As long as people make use of their imaginative abilities, there will be artistic expression.
MUSIC
This year's music program presented, as usual, a variety of material, not only to students through instruction, but also to the public through Glee Club and student body perform ances. Under the direction of Mr. Arthur Schroff, the music department continued its trend of expansion and improvement.
Music is introduced as early as kindergarten. V/eekly music classes are mandatory in the lower and middle schools. Here the boys are taught the fundamentals of singing and reading music in preparation for Glee Club participation in the high school. The entire student body combined with the Glee Clubs to present the Christmas Carol Service and the Commencement Service, both successful programs.
Within the past few years, the music depart ment at Wardlaw has expanded greatly. This year's successes would indicate further expan sion.
