On Thursday, January 29th, the Upper School held a symposium focusing on the issue of world hunger. Students, faculty, staff, community, and family members participated in a day-long series of events, culminating with the Oxfam Hunger Banquet. The purpose of the symposium, led by Coordinator of Sustainability and science teacher, Mrs. Barbara Drake, was not only to raise awareness, but also to remind our school population that hunger is a real problem facing not only those who are poor or without, but also people within our own community. Laura Sodano, the Hunger Action Coordinator for the Community FoodBank of NJ, and Bettina Luescher, the Senior Communications Officer for North American Global Issues for the U.N.'s World Food Programme, spoke with students about ways they can get involved and lend support within their community. "The Hunger Symposium really opened my eyes and made me realize how fortunate we truly are," Astitva Soni '16 said. "As
one of the many who fell under the 60% during the Hunger Banquet, it was eye-opening to experience, in some small way, what others around the world are going through."
