MATHEMATICS
Mathematics prepares us for sci ence and higher math. It is an exacting field. Contrasted with English, in which a novel or a poem can have many dif ferent implications, in math each sym bol means only one thing and an an swer is either right or wrong. Math teaches us to be exact, to follow a logi cal, step by step procession to derive the right answer to a given problem. Mrs. Gladys Katrausky, head of the Math Department, defines math as a “ unified, useful and connected body of knowledge.” It is her aim to teach stu dents to think clearly and quickly.
The Math Department has a struc tured program beginning with the mid dle school which offers an introduc tion to algebra and higher math. The student then has the option of con tinuing through geometry, algebra and trigonometry or of taking accelerated courses which culminate with an ad vanced placement calculus course.
The advanced courses offer stu dents the opportunity to pursue a sci ence or math related course in college while those taking the regular courses receive a broad background in the fun damentals of math. However, the main goal of the Math Department is to teach students, not only the princi ples of math, but also a systematic method of thinking.
