wonderful loud-speaker, and is a radio announcer. She’s here tonight broadcasting the opera and we’ll see her later.”
At this moment my cue came and I had to run, but we arranged to meet after the performance.
Later, with Goodie added to the party, we continued our reminis cences.
(iI was exploring Chinatown the other day when I saw a crowd and stopped to see what the excitement was about. There, perched on a soap
box was Florence Doughty leading hymns, in a Salvation Army uniform. and Lois was collecting contributions!”
‘‘Have any of you been to Sal Hayes’ class for gaining weight? Imagine anyone from Hartridge trying to ga'w! She’s at last reached her
goal and tips the scales at one hundred fifty. Think of it!”
‘‘Well, if you want a real surprise, meet me tomorrow at the Capitol.” Sally was so mysterious that we all agreed eagerly.
At the Capitol the next afternoon we were still buzzing about the Class of ’27, when the lights went out and The Desert Demon appeared on the scene starring ‘‘Gracia Bacheur” who turned out to be Grace Baker.
And the picture was ‘‘written and directed by Sarah Starr.” Sally smiled her satisfaction at our gasps of amazement, but her surprise was still incomplete. We had not noticed the sign outside which said, ‘‘ Miss Bacheur will appear in person,” and when Grace walked out on the stage we almost got up and shouted her name. Sally had asked her to join us for dinner and she had more news.
(iDid you know that Emmeline Mackey is ensconced in her castle in Spain, bringing up two dark-haired Spanish children to whom their mother
points with a proud, ‘Aren’t they the image of their father?’ ”
As we walked down Broadway under its myriad electric lights a hurrying figure dove headlong into Sally, doubling her up. She turned furiously to meet the apologetic gaze of Chicken Smith! Anger and
apology were forgotten in the excitement.
