Lewis B. Timberlake, 1920—1971
O God, our Father, we come before Thee this morning with a sense of loss and a feeling of emptiness. There has been taken from us one who was more than a teacher and a colleague, but one who was also a friend.
And yet in the midst of our mourning, we know that there is reason for gratitude. On behalf of all who were taught by him, we give thanks for his sense of dedication to the teaching profession, his keenness of intellect, the sharpness of his wit, and the creative powers he displayed in the world of publications. But more than anything else, we join in thanksgiving for his openness as a friend to students, friendships which often lasted long after the day of graduation.
In recalling the loss to our school, we remember in particular the loss of a husband and a father. Grant to Mrs. Timberlake and Elaine the knowledge of our love, and that underneath them are the arms of the everlasting God. In the chances and changes of life, give them the certainty of Thine abiding love; and in this hour show us more clearly how we can best serve them in Thy name.
Above all, help us to uphold the memory of Lewis Timberlake by approaching our tasks with his sense of dedication. Let us use our minds and talents more creatively, by living our lives as he did, with openness and friendliness toward one another.
In Memoriam: Lewis B. Timberlake
