Two successful practices—each with strong hospital and facility relationships,
each with strong management services organizations, each with a focus on quality care— joined forces to become one practice servicing the anesthesia needs of Colorado.
Why Two Leading Colorado Practices
Joined Forces As USAP-Colorado
The reason? To further build out their service delivery model so that they can continue to support the facilities they serve with dedicated teams, measurable quality and consistent excellence.
GREATER COLORADO ANESTHESIA
Greater Colorado Anesthesia (GCA) was formed between December 2012 and the summer of 2013, when three local groups joined forces. These three groups were proud of their new union. They felt strongly that they had a good team that excelled in quality clinical care and they were ready to continue their path of growth in and around the Denver area.
To succeed in this mission, they needed a strong administrative partner to help them with IT, HR, infrastructure and to ful ll their vision to build a strong clinical quality program. But which would serve them best? Did they need a visionary CEO? A strong practice administrator? Or would a national anesthesia provider best serve their needs? They had a big decision to make.
Internal discussions led to meetings with US Anesthesia Partners with GCA joining USAP in February 2015.
Through this new partnership, GCA providers gained access to resources and best practices that could strengthen their ability to meet the demands of their growing community. With more than 3,000 team members, USAP is one of the only national companies exclusively dedicated to the practice of anesthesiology. The actionable data available to GCA through USAP tools and technology enables greater visibility for patient care metrics and more informed decisions on patient care and safety, leading to even more positive patient outcomes.
“USAP allowed us to be ourselves, clinically, while serving as a collaborator, a true partner in the business of anesthesiology,” said Peter Harkness, MD, president of GCA. “By partnering
with USAP, we have the backing of a national organization that leverages collective clinical data and invests in IT, HR and the overall business infrastructure we need to grow our practice.” Once onboard with USAP, GCA was in a position to look for additional partners to help them enhance their delivery model to hospital and ambulatory surgery center (ASC) partners. Enter South Denver Anesthesiologists (SDA).

When SDA learned that GCA joined USAP, “the decision
for SDA to also join was quite easy; especially given USAP’s focus on continuous clinical quality,” said Matt Maloney, MD, president of SDA. “Most options we looked at for administrative support or growth wanted to own our practice. US Anesthesia Partners o ered a unique opportunity—we could tap into their management expertise, yet maintain local governance and
still run our own practice. USAP’s focus on quality matched
our focus on quality. With Dr. Rick Dutton in his role as USAP Chief Quality O cer, and his experience in national quality management, we felt USAP had great clinical leadership in addition to the superb leadership within the USAP corporate team. They had a solid track record of success in other geographies. Our decision to join was easy.”
Once both SDA and GCA were onboard with USAP, they had a greater opportunity to get to know each other. What they found is that they had a lot more in common than they thought. “This rea rmed our decision to join USAP. It didn’t take long before we each realized we, and our patients and hospital partners, would be better served if we unite as one practice,” said Dr. Maloney. “We are now part of a national network of leading
