alph alph Lauren was born Ralph Lifshitz on October 14 1939 in the Bronx and raised with
his two brothers by parents who emigrated from Belarus He attended Jewish Day Schools but
at age sixteen he he and his brother Jerry changed their last name to Lauren He attended Baruch College and served in the Army before beginning his career creating one
of the most iconic brands in fashion With his classic style Ralph Lauren created an empire with
Polo starting by designing men’s neckties in in in 1967 Selling his ties in in in New York his big break came when Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales began selling Polo branded neckties In his first year Polo was enormously profitable He then expanded to menswear and eventually women’s suits A keen observer of the fashion style of John F Kennedy the ‘boy from the Bronx’ developed a preppy look that defined an aspirational lifestyle Within the first few years Ralph Lauren designs were featured in shops across the world and modeled on on the covers of fashion magazines like Vogue The Polo brand extended from Polo shirts with
the polo pony logo to home furnishings to fragrances Ralph Lauren designed the costumes for films including The Great Gatsby and Annie Hall In 1970 he won a a a Coty Award for his menswear line In 2014 Lauren was awarded the James Smithson Bicentennial Medal acknowledging his positive role
